ART MOVIE REVIEW

By: Eugene Spencer Lopez

Grade 8- Compostela Valley

After watching the movie Spirited Away I was struck by the virtues taught by the
movie such as generosity, friendship, and love. The movie clearly showed to its viewers
these values especially to children who will watch the movie. Although most parts are
fictional, it didnt hindered the essence to rise and spread. The movie also showed that
children must love their parents and elders. This is applicable in their country because if
we will base this on staitstics, Japans citizens are mostly old. There was a part where
the lead character, Chihiro, lost her parents. She was greatly saddened. She would do
anything just for them to return to the human world. The movie also emphasized on
friendship. In the movie, Chihiro gained many friends including Yubabas baby. She also
showed love and care to her friends especially Haku, the river spirit. Spirited Away is a
finely created animated movie that teaches not only good virtues but also embodies the
characteristics of Japan. One example would be the kimonos and clothes used in the
film. The film showed the culture of Japan almost in every part of it. In the bathhouse,
the workers their wore kimonos and other clothes that relates to Japans culture.
Besides that ,the fact that there are spirits, embraces one of Japans religion, Shintoism.
In Shintoism, the people believed that everything has a spirit. Haku, Chihiros friend, is a
river spirit that saved her. This just shows Japans belief in spirits. The buildings also
looks like a traditional house in Japan. In the spirit world most houses reflect the houses
of Japanese. Another culture shown is the belief of Buddhist monks that men shouldnt
rely on worldly things that are not immortal. An example would be Chihiros satisfaction.
She didnt accept the gold that is being offered to her by No Face. She also tried not to
accept the bath tokens offered to her.
