OBJECTIVE
- To classify substances whether electrolyte or non-electrolyte.
- To identify the properties of acids, bases and salt.
Introduction
- Acids are substances that form hydrogen ions while bases are substances that form
hydroxyl ions in solution. An acid is a proton donor while a base is a proton acceptor.
Solutions of acids and bases are differentiated by their color reactions to indicator
-

III.

Acids, bases and salts are capable of producing ions in solution. They are called
electrolytes. Electrolytes are substances whose aqueous solutions are conductors of
electricity. Non-electrolytes are substances whose solutions do not conduct electricity.

MATERIALS AND PROCEDUR

A. MATERIALS
1 set test tube
1 50 ml beaker
1 test tube rack
1 medicine dropper
1 test tube brush
1 litmus paper(blue and red)
1 test tube holder
1 stirring rod
1 watch glass
B. PROCEDURE
ACIDS
- Place 4 test tubes on a rack. Label A1,A2,A3, and A4, add 2 ml of HCL to the first test
tube. HNO to the second H2SO4 to the third and HAc to the fourth test tube. Shake them
slowly. Dip a aclean stirring rod into the tube then rub into red and blue litmus paper.
- Add a drop of phenolphthalein to each test tub. Observe if there is any color change.
Add a drop of methyl orange to the same test tubes observe the change in color.
BASES
- Place 4 test tubes on a rack. Add 2 ml of 2% NaCl solution to the first test tube, 2% KCl
solution to the second, 2% CaSO4 solution to the first test tube and rub the blue and red
litmus papers in the end of stirring rod
- Add a drop of phenolphthalein indicator to each base tube. Observe the change in color.
SALTS
- Same procedure in Acids and Bases.
