ABSTRACT This phase control circuit is intended for AC power control (single phase / 3 phase). The trigger pulses can be shifted within a phase angle between 00 and 1800. Typical applications include convert circuit, AC controllers and three-phase current controllers. In this project the circuit is to be used for the control (speed) of AC Motors. It can also be used for dimming purposes (incandescent). The unit can be designed to handle very high power loads. The main feature of this circuit is the ability to trigger two anti-paralleled thyristors using a single phase control integrated circuit. The trigger pulse can be shifted continuously within a phase angle between 00 and 1800 by means of a potentiometer. During the negative line half-wave the trigger pulse from one of the outputs is fed to the relevant thyristors via a trigger pulse transformer. During the positive line half-wave, the gate of the second thyristors is triggered by a trigger pulse transformer, fed by the second output. The synchronization signal is obtained via a high-ohmic resistance from the line voltage. A zero voltage detector evaluates the zero passages and transfers them to the synchronization register. This synchronization register controls a ramp generator,a capacitor is charged by a constant. If the ramp voltage exceeds the control voltage (triggering angle j), a signal is processed to the logic. Dependent on the magnitude of the control voltage, the triggering angle j can be shifted within a phase angle of 0 to 180 .For every half wave, a positive pulse of approx. 30 ms duration appears at the outputs Q1 and Q2.The pulse duration can be prolonged up to 180 via a capacitor. It can also be configured to obtain pulses with a duration between j and 180 .
