Q.1 A 60- lossless line is connected to a 40- pulse generator. The line is 6 m long and is
terminated by a load of 100 . If a rectangular pulse of width 5s and magnitude 20 V is sent
down the line, find V(0, t) and I(l, t) for 0 < t < 10 s. Take u = 3 X 108 m/s.
Q.2 The switch in Figure 1 is closed at t = 0. Sketch the voltage and current at the right side
of the switch for 0 < t < 6l/u. Take Zo = 50 and l/u = 2 s. Assume a lossless transmission
line.

Q.3 Refer to Figure 2, where Zg = 25 , Zo = 50 , ZL = 150 , l = 150 m, u = c. If at t = 0,
the pulse shown in Figure 3 is incident on the line
(a) Draw the voltage and current bounce diagrams.
(b) Determine V(0, t), V(l, t), I(0, t), and I(l, t) for 0 < t < 4 s.

Q.4 For the series connection of two different lossless lines illustrated in Fig.4, sketch the
voltage at the load and at the junction. The line is series matched at the 5-V battery source
and terminated in an open circuit. Line 1 has a total time delay of 1 ns and a characteristic
impedance of 50 , while line 2 has a total time delay of 2 ns and a characteristic impedance
of 100 .

Q.5 A time-domain reflectometer (TDR) is an instrument used to determine properties of
transmission lines. In particular, it can be used to detect the locations of imperfections such as
breaks in the line. The instrument launches a pulse down the line and records the transit time
for that pulse to be reflected at some discontinuity and to return to the line input.
Suppose a TDR having a source impedance of 50- is attached to a 50- lossless coaxial
cable having some unknown length and load resistance. The dielectric of the cable is Teflon
(r=2.1). The open-circuit voltage of the TDR is a pulse of duration 10 s. If the recorded
voltage at the input to the line is as shown in Fig.5, determine (a) the length of the line and
(b) the unknown load resistance

Q.6 A 12-V battery (RS = 0) is attached to an unknown length of lossless transmission line
that is terminated in a resistance. If the input current to the line for 6 s is as shown in Fig.6,
determine (a) the line characteristic impedance and (b) the unknown load resistance.
