Essential Question: how and why do cells transport substances through their membranes?
Questions:
Level 1- What are
the 3 types of cell
transport?

Level 2- what are

the types of
solutions?

Notes:
1) Simple Diffusion
2) Facilitated Diffusion (uses channels)
Molecules require special protein channels to move
through the membranes (ions & glucose)
3) Osmosis (Diffusion/ transport of water)
Diffusion of water through special channels called
aquaporins
Isotonic solution
Equal amounts of solute & solvent
Cell stays the same
Hypotonic solution
Lower solute outside
Higher solute inside
Water goes in, cell swells
Hypertonic solution
Higher solute outside
Lower water inside
Water goes out, cell shrinks

Level 2- What is
penicillin? How
does it kill
bacteria?

Level 3- What is
turgor pressure?
How do the
solutions effect the
turgor pressure?

Level 4- Which
solution is best for
a living plant?

Used to treat infections caused by bacteria (example= strep

throat)
Weakens/destroys the cell wall making the bacteria
vulnerable to its surroundings, which causes them to pop.
Amount of pressure due to water, that helps the plant/cell
remain rigid
Hypertonic solution- The water from the inside of the cell
rushes out to the surrounding solution & the cell becomes
plasmolyzed.
Isotonic- Not enough rigidity for the cell, it is flaccid.
The isotonic solution is the best for a plant/ its cells because
it allows for the plant to gain water, rigidity, and structure,
causing the plant to stay strong ( cell becomes cytolyzed)

Hypertonic solutions are unhealthy for the plant cell because

it loses rigidity, water, and structure, causing the plant to
wilt.
Summary: There are three types of cell transport, simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis. Each type of
transport helps carry molecules across the cell membrane. Isotonic solutions, hypertonic solutions, and hypotonic
solutions effect a plants structure due to the amount of solute/solvent in the solution. Penicillin is used to treat
infections such as strep throat, by weakening/destroying the cell wall making the bacteria vulnerable to its
surroundings, which causes them to pop.
