BUILT-IN STORAGE

Zirl House, Tyrol. 1997

The partners Fuchs and Harnoncourt strove to push past the legacy of
rationality and envelpe the senses in all new ways with this Austrian house. It is
built on original plantings of a 19th century Viennesse Villa-the new work atop is
a play of of sensuous machinery.

Perhaps the odd obtrusions into

the the room and funky spaces
dug into the walls highlight the
artists’ dogma to build
“everything that intersests or
inspires us, everything that yields
sensual pleasure.” They intend
to engage the senses with every
movement in the house--even
these storage compartments
built into the wall call the
inhabitant to notice the length of
their arm.
