Belle settled beside her grandmother who was wrapped for warmth in a great

heap of blankets. She realised that she should not be crying for a birthday present when

there were people in greater difficulty than her.

The next day, Belle awoke before dawn. Lying there with the cold nibbling at

her fingers and feet, she decided that she must give the new baby a present.
