Dear Parents and Guardians,

Writing

There has been a change in the departure and

return times for our upcoming field trip to
Lansing on Wednesday, February 24th:
Depart: 7:10 sharp (Please be here between
6:50 - 7:00 AM. Students will board the bus at
7:00 AM.)
Return: approximately 3:20 PM

We have launched into our new unit: informational

writing. The students are enjoying going through all
steps of the writing process using the Chromebook
laptops.

Our Valentines Day Party will be on Thursday,

February 11th from 2:15-3:15. (Note: Students will not
be in school on Friday, February 12th due to a PD Day
for teachers.) Thank you to Mrs. Bandlow for
volunteering to plan the event and to the volunteers
who will donate food and time. Party sign-up
information is posted here.
I anticipate that many of the children will give small
Valentines to their classmates. Therefore, I would like
to encourage the students to write their Valentines in
cursive and to include a personalized little note inside
of each one. A list of classmates can be found
on page three of this newsletter.
Each student may wish to prepare a special box or bag
for his/her Valentines. The box or bag may be
brought to school anytime. This is an optional activity.

Reading
We have been learning about informational text
features such as tables, diagrams, sidebars, etc.
The students are progressing well on the 40-book
challenge. Many have already surpassed that goal and
have set new goals.

Mathematics
Long division is our current topic. Any review of the
skill that you could do at home would help solidify the
material. The fourth grade goal is to divide four-digit
dividends by 1-digit divisors. (Ex. 4,689 3)
The 100-problem multiplication tests continue. Were
currently working to complete 100 problems in 4
minutes. Were gradually working toward our final
goal, which is 100 problems in 3.5 minutes.

Math Lab
Our focus in math lab has been upon measuring to the
quarter inches. This week, well review another topic:
elapsed time. (Ex. Jake goes to practice at 4:30 PM and
gets home at 8:15 PM. How long was he gone?) Any
extra practice that you could provide at home would
be appreciated.

Science
We recently launched into our next unit: space and
technology. The students are learning about how the
Earth moves even though it seems to stand still.

Social Studies
Weve moved from government into geography and
economics. The students are learning about how the
United States is sectioned into six areas called regions
based on physical and agricultural similarities.

children will go outside for recess daily unless its raining,
the temperature is under 15 degrees, or the wind chill is
below zero. Please contact our schools counselor, Mrs.
