Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our Valentines Day Party will be on Friday, February
13th from 1:00-2:15. Thank you to Mrs. Davis for
planning the event and to the volunteers who will
donate food and time. Party sign-up information is
posted here. Families are welcome and encouraged to
attend our classroom party.
I anticipate that many of the children will give small
Valentines to their classmates. Therefore, I would like
to encourage the students to write their Valentines in
cursive and to include a personalized little note inside
of each one. A list of classmates can be found
on page three of this newsletter.
Prior to the party, students may wish to prepare a
special mailbox/mailbag for their Valentines. The box
or bag may be decorated any way the student chooses.
Some containers that work well include oatmeal
canisters, shoe, cereal and tissue boxes, white lunch
sacks, etc. Boxes/bags may be brought to school
anytime before the party. This is an optional activity.

Reading
Students have been enjoying our study of mysteries.
They have learned many new vocabulary words that
you may wish to review at home: alibi, clue, crime,
detective, evidence, red herring, sleuth, suspect, victim, and
witness.
Your childs mid-year fluency (DIBELS) and reading
level (DRA) scores have been determined, and you will
receive the data at your upcoming conference. Most
students have shown considerable improvement in
both areas since the fall. Way to go!

February 9, 2015

The spring fluency goal is to read 110+ correct words

in a minute on the first try. The repeated reading of
the weekly fluency page is highly recommended. To
achieve a 4th grade or higher reading level by spring,
students should continue to read a minimum of 20+
minutes at home each day.

Writing
The children are in the final stages of writing their
second personal narratives. Soon they will utilize a
scoring rubric to edit their work.

Mathematics
Our study of multiplication and division, including
lots of word problems, continues. We will have a x6
test on Tuesday.
Some geometry concepts have been introduced
through our Math Minute work. Students have learned
the definition of a polygon and the names of some
polygons: quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon.

Science
Weve been reading information in chapter 10. Some
vocabulary words addressed in that chapter include:
matter, mass, grams, and centimeters.

Social Studies
We are learning the history of the first Native
American tribes in Michigan and their way of life.

Spelling
Spelling tests will be taken in cursive for the remainder
of the year. The spelling lists, handwriting sheets, and
games can be found here.
