You will be assigned a drawer in the sewing lab to store your sewing supplies. It is recommended
that you purchase a lock to keep your supplies secure.

Attendance is extremely important. It is critical that you are in class and ON TIME. . Roll will be
taken at the beginning of each class. If you are more than 10 minutes late, it is considered an
absence. You have 3 absences and then there is a ½ drop in grade for every day after missed. A
total of 6 absences equals a failed “F” grade. If you are more than 10 minutes late, it counts as an
absence.

Samples are completed and demonstrations are given at the beginning of class and as a result it is
important to be on time. Please be “On Time & On Task” each day. On task means working on
class-related projects. You are expected to attend for the full class period unless excused
early. You must sew on your projects in class in order to receive a grade. Also, realize that
students do much better in a sewing class if they are teachable, using the techniques which are
taught and demonstrated in class.

The only excused absences are school sponsored field trips/activities. In order to be excused the
student must give instructor the official BYUI activity excused absence form signed by the faculty
member who is sponsoring the activity. If you email instructor before class begins to inform that
you are sick and cannot attend class, any work due that day will not be late. It will be due as soon
as you return to school. If you do not email instructor before class begins, your work will be
late. If you have extenuating circumstances or illness, please consult with instructor.

Assignments will be due no later than 5:00 p.m. on the assigned due date for full credit.
Late projects will be accepted only one week beyond the due date. Also, remember partially
completed projects are not accepted.

Students are required to attend and participate in the Fashion Show modeling one of the finished
projects. (Fall and Winter only.)

Your textbook is an excellent resource. Please read your assignment prior to class. Remember to
bring your textbook to class each day.

All sewing items, classroom equipment and personal items should be returned to their proper place
before leaving the classroom. Keeping the sewing machines, sergers, cutting room, and lab clean is
“Your” responsibility and helps keep the lab a safe environment. Be familiar with lab and cutting
room rules. Treat the irons with care—make sure they are hot prior to using them. Clean the irons
if you melt something on the bottom. Also, make sure that your bobbin case is left in front of
your machine at the end of class.

Clarke 320 is available to you whenever a class is not in session. There will be lab assistants
available each evening and on Saturday. Only students currently enrolled in a sewing class can be in
Clarke 320.

Goals:

At BYU-Idaho we foster faith –building and life-changing learning. Our faith in the Lord Jesus
Christ, the gifts of the Holy Ghost, our commitment to the restored gospel, and our effort to build
a Zion learning community motivate us to learn and teach by study and by faith. We will be using
the BYU-I Learning Model in this class.

Use class time wisely. Take notes. Stay caught up in your reading assignments. Come to lab during
open hours to get the assigned work accomplished for the next class period. The quality of your
work should increase with each project. Set your standards high—I’m trying to push you to a
higher level.

One of the major goals at BYU-I is that of providing quality educational opportunities in a rich
spiritual environment. To obtain this desired level of spiritual influence, students are asked to
observe all points of the Code of Honor, including dress and grooming standards.

University Policies:

Disability Services

BYU-Idaho does not discriminate against persons with disabilities in providing its
educational and administrative services and programs, and follows applicable federal and
state law. This policy extends to the University’s electronic and information technologies
(EIT).

Students with qualifying disabilities should contact the Disability Services Office at
disabilityservices@byui.edu or 208-496-9210. Additional information about Disability
Services resources can be found at http://www.byui.edu/disabilities.

Preventing Sexual Misconduct

BYU-Idaho prohibits sex discrimination against any participant in its education programs or
activities. Prohibited sex discrimination includes incidents of sexual harassment (including
sexual violence), dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking (collectively
“sexual misconduct”).
As an instructor, one of my responsibilities is to help create a safe learning environment for
my students and for the campus as a whole. University policy requires that I report all
incidents of sexual misconduct that come to my attention. If you encounter sexual
misconduct, please contact the Title IX Coordinator at titleix@byui.edu or 208-496-9200.
Additional information about sexual misconduct and available resources can be found at
www.byui.edu/titleix.

Children in the Classroom (4-7):

Children are not allowed to be present in BYU-Idaho classes due to space restrictions, fire
code compliance, and the need to limit distractions. Students have the responsibility to
arrange for childcare away from classroom and study areas so as to preserve and enhance
learning opportunities for all students. In one-time emergency situations, the teacher of a
class may allow a student to bring a child to class based on terms set by the teacher.
Teachers are neither required nor encouraged to consent to a student’s request to bring a
child to class, but should use discretion based on the best interest of all students in the
class.

Cell Phones:
All cell phones should be turned off during class hours and should be in your backpack. An
exception may be made with prior approval for an emergency. Electronic devices can only be
used in class when using I-Learn or a tutorial that relates to a class project.

Fabric Requirements:

Each project which we will be making this semester will have certain fabric requirements. Since
this is an advanced sewing class I want you to stretch your wings a bit and be somewhat
adventurous on our later projects. Gaining experience on a variety of fabrics will buoy your self
confidence as you continue to sew in the future.

On the end of the fabric bolt you will find information very helpful regarding care instructions,
price, fabric width, and special finishes that may have been applied to the fabric during the
fabrication process. Always check the fabric content and the care that is required.
