Question 1: Insects
Insects have inspired many artists,
designers and filmmakers. Rene Lalique
designed exquisite jewellery which features
dragonflies and butterflies. MC Esher used
a variety of insect imagery in his work.
Installations by Rafael Gomezbarros used
giant sculptures of ants to symbolise the
plight of refugees. Insects also feature in
computer animated films such as 'Antz'
and A Bugs Life'.
With reference to appropriate examples,
produce a personal response.

Question 2: Beneath our feet


Beneath our feet the ground beneath our
feet to come provide interesting subject
matter for artists and designers. The Boyle
Family produced highly detailed painted
casts to recreate randomly chosen areas
of the earth surface. You might also like to
consider examples include exquisite
Roman floor mosaics, intricately patterned
Persian carpets or Carl Andre's
methodically arranged tiles.
Investigate relevant work by others and
develop a personal response.

Scottish artist who began
exhibiting with Joan Hills and their
children Sebastian and Georgia
as the Boyle Family in 1985

Question 3: The eyes


The eyes are striking features of the face
which have been portrayed in different
ways by artists, designers and
photographers. Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona
Lisa' is renowned for the intriguing and
haunting eyes of the sitter. Tony Tasset
produced a public installation based on his
own eye ball. Siren Manveylan takes
macro photographs that reveal the detail
in animals eyes.
Consider it appropriate work but others and
develop your own response to this theme.

Question 4: Curves
The potential of curves has been explored
by many designers, artists and architects.
Jules Cheret created energy and
dynamism in his posters by exploiting
curves. Jean Arp produced sculptures and
paintings in which curves are important
elements. Ron Arad designed architecture
and furniture using utilising curved shapes.
Respond in your own way to this theme,
making reference to relevant work of
others.

Question 5: Rocks, pebbles


and stones
Many artists and designers have been
inspired by rocks, pebbles and stones.
Rene Magritte painted many surreal
images featuring stone. The sculptor
Barbara Hepworth responded to the form
and surface of qualities of stones and
pebbles. Coloured pebbles are used in
Maggie Howarth's mosaics. Chris Booth
create site-specific installations from
stones.

Modernism and in particular modern sculpture.
