Factors Impacting Group Decision Making

Drawing on your past experience, whether in a professional or academic environment (other than the current
course), respond to the following questions:

Discuss a past positive group experience (either personal or professional). What were some of the factors
that enhanced group decision making?

A positive group experience that I have is when I was working at Dennys. On one of my days off,
I was asked to go in as the only server. I said that I would come in and help out any way I could.
Once I had gotten in, I notice that the manager was helping me out. For a Sunday, we were
really busy and under staffed. Luckily, I was able to get my manager to work with me as a team.
I would go get the orders for drinks and she would fill and deliver those drinks. While that was
being done, I was going and checking all tables for possible orders to be put in. After checking,
with table my manager would already be standing at the computer putting in what orders I yelled
out. After the bar rush was completed and we died down for the night, my manager walks over to
me and hands me all the tips that she made and other tips from my tables. We were able to get
everything cleaned up and ready for the first shift.\ for the next morning. Once I was able to
clock out my manager had the cook my me breakfast and I did not have to pay for it. That night I
made 183 dollars in cash and 97 dollars on Credit. For going in and work myself to death, to see
that total amount in tips was well worth it and made that night a positive night.

Discuss a past negative group experience (either personal or professional). What were some of the factors
that hindered group decision making?

I would say that the negative group experience I ever had was in High School. It was my senior
year and was in English Media Arts. I was in a group of 7. Not only was the group not really a fan
of the topic, 5 of the members were failing that class and that semester. I and my friend were the
only two to do work for that class. We did all that work and advised the other 5 to just show up
on presentation day and present. On the day of presentation, they did not show up and my friend
and I was left to present. While we received an A, those other 5 were given a C. I had went to
the teacher and asked why not doing works gets you a C and doing all the work gets you a low A.
She states that based on the peer review, they got what they deserved. Not only is it a pass on
that class; but an example of others doing all the work can possibly get you by. I felt that they
deserve a low D, or an F.
