Preposition: Place
At : place, exact position is not important
E.g. He was standing at the gate.

On: place seen as a line or linear.


E.g. The cat sat on the table.

In: place has volume or surface area.


E.g. My keys are in my bag.

Preposition: Movement
To, at, away from
E.g. She ran to the gate.
She stood at the gate.
She walked away from the gate.

On, onto, off


E.g. He put the money onto the table.
The money is on the table.
The money fell off the table.

In, into, out off.


E.g. The dog jumped into the car.
The dogs in the car.
Take the dog out of the car.

Preposition: Time
At, in, on
E.g. She wakes up at 6 oclock. (Time)
She goes to work early in the morning.
(a period of time)
She is coming on Monday. (Day or date)

Until, before, after


E.g. She is staying until Sunday.
She stayed until Sunday.
(The end of a period of time: past of future)
We had some coffee before starting the meeting.
Ill see you after lunch.

Phrasal Verb
Phrasal verbs are usually two-word phrases
1. verb + adverb
2. verb + preposition.

get up : He gets up at 5 a.m.


pick up : Ill pick you up outside the campus.
took off : The plane took off smoothly.
slowed down: The car slowed down due to
traffic jams.
give up: Ill give up smoking soon.

look out
speak up
go back
sleep in
set off
stay in

E.g. Were sleeping in (no object) today.


E.g. Can you pick up the bag (object)?

Phrasal Verbs : take an object,


separable
E.g. I cant pick this bag up.
E.g. I put my glasses down somewhere but now
cant remember where.
E.g. I dont know the answer but I must find it
out.

E.g. He takes after his fathers good looks.

E.g. I came across an old photograph of you


yesterday.
E.g. She works as a waitress but she cant live off
that.
