Rehearsals: Students are expected to attend all rehearsals. If you cannot attend a rehearsal, a
substitute may be arranged to take your place. It is up to you to find a suitable sub and notify
me in advance. The sub must be at a comparable musical level to you or in higher lab band. It
is also up to you to get the music to them in advance, and to make sure that they get it back to
you. An empty chair at rehearsal due to no sub will result in the lowering of the student
members final grade.
Performances: Attendance at all performances is mandatory. If you miss a performance for
any reason, your final grade will be lowered. Exceptions to this rule are at my discretion.
Punctuality: Be warmed up, tuned, and ready to play BEFORE rehearsal begins. This
professional adage is helpful for clarification: Early is on time, On-Time is late, and Late is
fired. Chronic tardiness will result in the lowering of your final grade.
Sectionals: Sectionals may called from time to time, particularly in close proximity to concerts
and other important events.
Practice: Everybody is expected to practice the music in your folders diligently. Another adage
to consider: Your rate of improvement as a musician is directly proportional to the amount
and quality of your shed-time.
Music: You are all expected to take proper care of the music, to keep your folders organized,
and to bring your music to every rehearsal, performance, and sectional. Any single piece of
music that is lots will require a $1.00 charge to you per page to replace. The loss of a music
folder and all of its music will result in a $50.00 charge to you to replace.

Mutes, Doubles, and Gear: You are all expected to bring all mutes, and doubles as necessary to
each rehearsal. All members of the rhythm section are expected to bring all gear and
accessories not provided by UNT Jazz to every rehearsal.
Google Group/Listening: Listening to recordings is important for any kind of music, but
especially for jazz. I have a created a Google group called The UNT U-Tubes which is at
http://groups.google.com/group/U-Tubes. This is a private group for you guys to listen to many of
the things that we will be performing. It will also provide an easy way for you to e-mail all members of
the U-Tubes if needed. Please e-mail/text me personal conflicts rather than listing them on the Google
group!

Grading is based on the following: A consistently high level of positive contribution musically
and attitude-wise to the ensemble. This positive contribution consists of attendance record,
musical record, rehearsal standard, and improvement throughout the semester. You should
treat playing in this ensemble the same way you would treat playing on an awesome gig that
you really want to keep. Your level of dedication will be noticed by all involved, and will surely
have repercussions on your future opportunities as a musician.
