The Sunan of Salh

Irshaad Sedick

Sunan
A sunnah [pl. sunan] is an act which Allh
encourages but does not obligate. As such the
one who does it is rewarded but the one who
fails to do it is not punished.

The Sunan of Salh

The sunan of salh are those actions and
statements related to salh which were the
habit of the Messenger of Allh [peace be upon
him] in most instances. Unlike the shurt and
arkn of salh, failure to perform them does not
invalidate the salh.

Importance
The Messenger of Allh [peace be
upon him] said:
He who dislikes my sunnah is not of
me. [Bukhr: 5063]

They are many but can be divided into two
primary types: a) ab`d and hayt. The ab`d

parcel of salh and which if left out does not
invalidate the salh but can be recovered by
performing sujd al-sahwi [the prostration of
forgetfulness]. The hayt are accompanying
sunan the discard of which neither invalidates
the salh nor requires sujd al-sahwi.
