GASPER
INTRODUCTION
The gasper system receives air from the main distribution ducts or
from the gasper fan and distributes this air for ventilation of the
cockpit, passenger cabin, lavatory, rear electronic compartment,
oxygen cylinder compartment, and relay boxes.
DESCRIPTION
An outlet from the cross connection of the main distribution lines
supplies air to the gaspers, to the rear electronic compartment, to the
oxygen cylinder, and to the relay boxes. The gasper system uses air
from this line or from the gasper fan. A gasper shutoff valve and a
thermal switch control the selection between the fan and the main
distribution line.

One temperature switch and an air gasper shutoff valve are installed
in the line derived from the cross-connection of the main distribution
ducts.
The gasper shutoff valve closes when the air temperature reaches
24oC (75oF). In this condition, only air from the gasper fan is available.
If the gasper system is set to off in flight, the gasper shutoff valve is
electrically closed and the gasper fan is off.
On the ground, the gasper fan operates independently of the pushbutton position to guarantee rear electronic compartment ventilation.
The main components of the system are:
Gasper shutoff valve.
Thermal switch.
Gasper fan.

The air with low thermal conductivity goes to the modular honeycomb
plate ducts which are installed at the overhead bin panel (upper
ducts). The cold air ducts and gasper ducts are integral with the upper
ducts.

Mufflers.

The gasper air is segregated from the cold air both physically and
thermally.

The figure GASPER SYSTEM - MAIN COMPONENT LOCATIONS

shows the location of the main components of the system.

Gasper switch.
Toilet gasper-hose filter.

Each module of the upper ducts has drains to eliminate the accumulation of water condensation. The drain tubes are directed to the lower
part of the fuselage between insulation and liner, near the fuselage
drains.
The passenger gasper outlets installed in the PSUs and lavatory are
connected to the gasper ducts by means of flexible ducts.
The air to the pilot gaspers comes from the right-side gasper ducts.
This derivation is also used for ventilation of the oxygen cylinder
compartment and relay boxes.
The gasper fan only operates at high speed.

THERMAL SWITCH

The gasper thermal switch is hermetically sealed, of the single-pole,

single-throw type, and controls the operation of the gasper shutoff
valve. When the temperature is more than 24oC (75oF), the shutoff
valve is closed. When the temperature is less than 24oC (75oF), the
valve is open. It is the same type of switch as used in the passenger
cabin distribution system (Ref. 21-22).
GASPER FAN

The gasper fan is an axial fan with mixed flow impeller moved by an
autosynchronous motor. It supplies a flow of 113 l/s (29.84 gal/min) at
sea level. A switch on the control panel controls the gasper fan
operation in flight and the air/ground logics controls it on the ground.
MUFFLERS

The mufflers absorb the noise made by the gasper fan airflow and the
airflow coming from the packs. They are made of flexible duct with
flexible porous interior, externally covered with a 0.5 in-thick layer of
sound absorbent material.
GASPER SWITCH

The gasper switch is installed in the air conditioning/pneumatic control

panel. It controls the gasper fan and the shutoff valve, only in flight.
The gasper switch positions are:
Pressed. Gasper fan on, striped bar off.
Released. Gasper fan off, striped bar on.
The figure GASPER - THERMAL SWITCH shows its location.

TOILET GASPER-HOSE FILTER

The toilet gasper-hose filter is installed in the gasper duct, behind the
amenity dispenser in the lavatory. It is used to prevent that the
contaminated air from the gasper fan activates the lavatory smoke
detector (Ref. 26-14).
The figure GASPER - TOILET GASPER-HOSE FILTER shows its
location.

OPERATION
The gasper system uses air from the main distribution lines or from
the gasper fan. The gasper ducts supply this air to the gaspers, to the
rear electronic compartment, to the oxygen cylinder, and to the relay
boxes.
The thermal switch controls the gasper valve:
If the temperature in the distribution duct is more than 24oC (75oF),
the valve closes.
If the temperature in the distribution duct is less than 24oC (75oF),
the valve opens.
When the aircraft is on the ground, the shutoff valve and the gasper
fan operate independently of the switch positions. This is to make
sure the gasper system will supply sufficient air for the rear electronic
compartment cooling.
The air from the gasper fan and shutoff valve flows to the gasper
ducts and the rear electronic compartment. The gasper ducts connect
to the gaspers through flexible ducts. The gaspers are installed in the
PSUs, in the lavatory, in the cockpit, in the relay boxes, and near the
oxygen cylinder compartment.
The figure GASPER - SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM shows its operation.

GASPER - ELECTRICAL OPERATION

When the aircraft is energized on the ground, DC Bus 2 supplies 28 V

DC to energize the gasper fan contactor through the 5 A GASPER
FAN circuit breaker and through the air ground position relay
(deenergized). It occurs independently of the gasper fan switch on
the overhead panel. The gasper fan contactor closes its contacts to
supply 28 V DC to the gasper fan from RB DC Bus 2.
The air gasper valve receives a positive signal from the DC Bus 2
through the air ground relay and through the gasper fan relay, and
also receives a ground signal from the air ground position relay and
through the gasper fan relay. It energizes the air gasper valve to open
because the temperature of the distribution air is < 24oC (< 75oF).
If the temperature of the distribution air is 24oC ( 75oF), the gasper
fan relay receives a ground signal through the gasper thermoswitch.
The gasper fan relay energizes and permits a ground signal and a
positive signal to be supplied to the air gasper valve. It closes the air
gasper valve not to supply distribution air to the gasper outlets. Only
the gasper fan supplies air to the gasper outlets.
In flight, the system works in the same way. Therefore, you must push
the gasper fan switch to energize the gasper fan. If you do not push
the gasper fan switch, the gasper fan does not operate and the air
gasper valve closes.
The figure GASPER - ELECTRICAL DIAGRAM shows the operation of the system.
