102: Introduction to Physics-2

Tutorial-3
(Vector calculus)

1. Calculating flux:
Let Q be the region bounded by the sphere x2 + y2 + z2 = 4. Find the outward
flux of the vector field (x, y, z) = 2x3 ! + 2y3 ! + 2z3 through the sphere.
2. Curl of a vector field:
A liquid is swirling around in a cylindrical
container of radius 2, so that its motion is
described by the velocity field
, , = ! + ! ! + ! + ! !
as shown in Figure 1. Find
Figure 1
!

where is the upper surface of the cylindrical container.

3. Stokes theorem :
If C, a closed space curve be the oriented
triangle lying in the plane S: 2x + 2y + z = 6,
as shown in Figure 2. Evaluate

. ,

where (x, y, z) = 2y! + z! + x. Also,

verify the Stokes theorem for the oriented
triangular surface lying in S and enclosed by
C.
