1. A projectile is launched at the origin of a rectangular co-ordinate system
(x − y) as shown in the figure, with an initial velocity v0 = 200 m/s at a
jump slope angle θ = 300 . Determine the following:

(a) The instantaneous position vector function of the projectile r(t).


(b) The maximum height the projectile attains ym .
(c) The range R.
(d) The impact velocity ve .

2. (a) An automobile is travelling along the section of circular curve of the


road with a radius r = 25 m at the location and instant as shown in
the figure.

The rate of change of its angular displacement is θ̇ = 0.5 rad/s, with


an angular acceleration of θ = 0.15 rad/s2 . Determine the magnitude
of the vehicle’s velocity and acceleration at this instant.
(b) A particle moves along the curve x = 2t2 , y = t2 − 4t, z = 3t − 5 where
t is the time. Find the components of velocity and acceleration at time
t = 1 in the direction i − 3j + 2k.

3. The following figure is a baggage conveyor in one airport. We assume a

box shown in the figure transported from the exit of the collection station
by the moving conveyor. Approximate dimensions and the motion of the
conveyor are illustrated in the diagram. We further assume that the conveyor
is designed to move the baggage from zero initial velocity at entry location
at point O with acceleration a(t) = 0.001 m/s2 between location O to point
C, but it moves the baggage at a constant velocity with no acceleration
thereafter. Determine the following:

(a) The velocity of the box baggage at location a and c.


(b) The acceleration and its direction of the baggage at the same locations.
(c) The time required for the baggage to reach point c.
(d) The time required for the baggage to return to the collection section O′
if it os not picked up by the passanger.

4. (a) In the x − y plane, show that the line integral of the vector field u =
−yi+xj counter clockwise around a square with vertices (0, 0), (L, 0), (L, L), (0, L)
is twice the area of the square.
(b) In the x − y plane, show that the line integral of the vector field u =
−yi + xj counter clockwise around a circle of radius R centered at the
origin is twice the area of the square.
(c) A mass m is dropped from a building of height h. Assuming the mass
fall with constant acceleration −g, calculate the work done by gravity
and compute the velocity of the mass as it hits the ground.

5. (a) An automobile travels on a circular track with a radius of 25 m as shown


in figure to the roght. If the magnitude of the velocity vector function
of the vehicle is v(t) = 1 + 2t2 m/s, and the starting location of the
vehicle is P in the following figure determine the following:

(i) The magnitude of the acceleration of the velocity at 4 seconds from


satellite location.
(ii) The distance and number of laps that the car has travelled in 10 seconds.
(b) The points on a coil spring are (x, y, z) = (cost, sint, t). Find the mass
of two complete turns (from t = 0 to t = 4π if the density is ρ = 4.

6. (a) Find the surface area of the cone z = x2 + y 2 up to the height z = a.

(b) Find the same area using dS = 2ududv.
(c) Find the area of the same cone up to the sloping plane z = 1 − 21 x.

7. (a) U = x2 + y 2 + z 2 is a scalar field, and volume RV is the cylinder x2 + y 2 ≤


a2 , 0 ≤ z ≤ h. Compute the surface integral S U dS over the surface of
the cylinder.
(b) Derive S a.dS where a = z 3 k and S is the surface of a sphere of radius

8. (a) Derive C U dr (i) directly and (ii) using Stokes’ theorem, where U =
x2 + y 2 + z 2 and the line integral is taken around C the circle (x − a)2 +
y 2 = a2 and z = 0.
(b) Verify Stoke’s theorem in a plane for F = xyi − 2yzj − zxk where S is
the open surface of the rectangular parallelepiped formed by the planes
x = 0, x = 1, y = 0, y = 2, z = 0, z = 3 above the x − y plane.

9. (a) The concentration of salt in a body of salt water can be described by


the function f (x, y, z) = x2 + y 2 z 4 + x3 z 3 at the point (x, y, z) (in feet).
Your are standing in the water at the point (−1, 1, −1).
(i) In which direction should you move if you want the concentration
to increase the fastest?
(ii) Suppose you start to move in the direction you found in part (a) at
a speed of 2 m/s. How fast is the concentration changing? Explain
your answer.
(b) The temperature field at any point on a metal plate is given by T (x, y) =
1000
x2 +y 2 +5
.
(i) Where on the plate is it the hottest? W hat is the temperature at
that point?
(ii) At the point (3, 2), find the direction of the greatest increase in
temperature. W hat is the magnitude of that greatest increase?
(iii) At the point (3, 2), find the direction of the greatest decrease in
temperature.
(iv) Does the vector you found in part (ii) point towards your answer
from part (i)? If not, why not?
(v) Find a direction at the point (3, 2) where the temperature does not
increase or decrease.

10. (a) Verify the Gauss Divergence Theorem for F = 4xzi − y 2 j + yzk over
the cube bounded by x = 0, x = 1, y = 0, y = 1, z = 0, z = 1.

1. (i) Find the directional derivative of ϕ = x2 yz + 4xz 2 at (1, −2, −1) in the
direction of 2i − j − 2k. In what direction the directional derivative
will be maximum and what is its magnitude? Also find normal to the
surface x2 yz + 4xz 2 = 6 at the point (1, −2, −1).
(ii) Find the angle between the surfaces x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 9 and z = x2 + y 2 − 3
at the point (2, −1, 2).

2. (i) Compute the work done in moving a particle in the force field F =
3x2 i + (2xz − y)j + zk along
(a) A straight line from P (0, 0, 0) to Q(2, 1, 3)
(b) Curve C: defined by x2 = 4y, 3x3 = 8z from x = 0 to x = 2
(ii) Verify Green’s theorem by evaluating C [(x3 − xy 3 )dx + (y 3 − 2xy)dy]

3. (i) Show that F = (2xy + z 3 )i + x2 j + 3xz 2 k is a conservative force field.


Find the scalar potential and work done by F in moving an object in
the field from (1, −2, 1) to (3, 1, 4).
