Instructions: Use the assignment format and solve the following problems with final answers enclosed.

Write your solutions neatly and strictly NO ERASURES. Deadline will be on November 25/26, 2019.

One-Dimension Kinematics

1. A car begins driving from a stationary position. It accelerates at 4 m/s2 for 10 seconds, then
travels at a steady speed for another 10 seconds, all in the same direction. How much distance
has it covered since it started driving?
2. A Ford Mustang GT can acceleration from zero to 60 mph ( 26.8 m/s) in 4.9 s. What is the
average acceleration of the car during that period of time? If acceleration on the car is constant,
how far does the car travel in those 4.9 s?
3. A hot-air balloon is rising upward with a constant speed of 3.50 m/s. When the balloon is 115 m
above the ground, a passenger trying to take a picture accidentally drops his cell phone over the
side of the balloon. Ignoring air resistance, how much time elapses before the cell phone hits
the ground?
4. Starting from rest, a car accelerates at a constant 4.00 m/s2 for a distance of 425 m. The car is
then shifted into neutral and slows down at a rate of 2.25 m/s2. How much time elapses
between when the car starts and when it stops?
5. An engineer is designing the runway for an airport. Of the planes that will use the airport, the
lowest acceleration rate is likely to be 3 m/s2. The takeoff speed for this plane will be 65 m/s.
Assuming this minimum acceleration, what is the minimum allowed length for the runway?
6. A bullet leaves a rifle with a muzzle velocity of 521 m/s. While accelerating through the barrel of
the rifle, the bullet moves a distance of 0.840 m. Determine the acceleration of the bullet
(assume a uniform acceleration).
7. A baseball is popped straight up into the air and has a hang-time of 6.25 s. Determine the height
to which the ball rises before it reaches its peak.

Two-dimension Kinematics

8. A rocket is fired at a speed of 75.0 m/s from ground level, at an angle of 60.0o above the
horizontal. The rocket is fired toward an 11.0 m high wall, which is located 27.0 m away. By how
much does the rocket clear the top of the wall?
9. A golf ball rolls off a horizontal cliff with an initial speed of 11.4 m/s. The ball falls a vertical
distance of 15.5 m into a lake below. (a) How much time does the ball spend in the air? (b) How
far from the edge of the cliff does the ball land? (c) What is the speed v of the ball just before it
strikes the water?
