TITLE:
Duration of Gum Flavor Lab
2. ABSTRACT:
Before the lab began we knew that chewing flavored gum is something many
people enjoy. We were wondering which type of gum would have the most
flavor and we hypothesized that Juicy Fruit would have the most flavor. Our
procedure was to chew one stick each of four types of gum until it was no
longer sweet. We found that Juicy Fruit had flavor the longest. We explained
our finding by saying that since the name Juicy Fruit sounds like there would
be a lot of flavor in it, the company decided it would be worth it for the gum
to live up to its name.
3. INTRODUCTION:
Before the lab began we knew that most gum have flavor and that the flavor
runs out after chewing the gum for a certain amount of time. (Wonderopolis
website page about gum). We observed that the sticks of gums were
individually wrapped and kept in a box. The sticks of gums smelled nice.
4. QUESTION & HYPOTHESIS:
For this lab our question was: Which type of gum will have flavor the
longest? If I keep track of how long the flavor last in four types of gum then
Juicy Fruit gums flavor will last the longest because the people who sell
Juicy Fruit want it to be as juicy as its name sounds.
5. MATERIALS:
1 stick of Dentyne gum
1 stick of Wrigleys gum
1 stick of Juicy Fruit gum
1 stick of Trident gum
6. PROCEDURE:

1. Take one stick of gum from 4 different brands.

2. Chew each piece one at a time.
3. Time how long you chew until its no longer sweet.
4. Record the data.
5. Repeat with a different stick of gum.
7. RESULTS:
Gum Flavor

Flavor Duration (Minutes)

Dentyne

Wrigleys

Juicy Fruit

Trident

.5

Our pattern was that Juicy Fruit last the longest (lasts 8 minutes) and Trident
(lasts .5 minutes) lasts the shortest.
8. CONCLUSION:
Our hypothesis was accepted because we predicted Juicy Fruit would be
sweet the longest and it did. Some possible errors include that we only
chewed one flavor of each brand of gum and that we only chewed one stick
of gum of each brand. Our results are not conclusive because we do not have
enough data.
We inferred that our pattern exists because Juicy Fruit sounds more flavorful
and therefore has to be more flavorful. Our results connect into sales of gum
because gum companies will want to make sure their gum has flavor that lasts
the longest. As a result of our research we were wondering: If we tested other
types of gum, would they have similar data?
