Quantity of material used for a Hollow block work

(400X200X200)?
1. Qty of HOllow block is 10 to 12 numbers / Sqm
2. Cement sand ratio preferable is 1:4
3. For 1:4 CM the cement, sand calculation as follows
Volume of mortor = Horizontal joints 5 rows of 200 mm wide
20 mm thick = 5*.2*.02 = .02 cum
Volume of verticaljoints : 5*2.5*.2*.2*.02 = .01 cum
Total = .03 + 30 % wastage = 0.039 Cum of Cement Mortor
For 1:4 ratio
Weight of cement in 1 Sqm = .039*1*(1/5)*1440 = 11.232
Kg /Sqm
Volume of Sand = .039*1*(4/5) = .0312 Cum = 1.11 Cubic foot

NOTE: But in actual it occurs more than the above

calculated values because many unskilled people filling the
hollow portions of the block. This is the wrong practice.
The Laying system is such that the hollow portion to be
overlapped with filled portion hence the hollow portion to
be maintained. This will give good heat reduction inside
the building.

1. the quantity of CHB required per sq.m. is equal to area to be filled divided by the
area of CHB
= 1 sqm / ( 0.4x0.2 ) = 12.5 CHB, approx. 13 CHB (16"x8"x8)
2. computing the mortar required using the density of 1 bag of portland cement (1506
kg/cu.m) and density of dry sand (1602 kg/ cu.m)
* volume of mortar horizontal joint = 5row x 0.2m x 1.0m x 0.01m = 0.01cu.m
* volume of mortar vertical joint = 4row x 0.2m x 1.0m x 0.01m = 0.008cu.m
* total mortar required = 0.01 + 0.008 = 0.018cu.m
3. using the commonly used ratio for making a good mortar 1:3,
* quantity of cement required = 1/4 (density of cement x total vol of mortar) =
1/4(1506x0.018) = 6.78kgs
* quantity of dry sand required = 3/4 (density of dry sand x total vol of mortar) =
3/4(1602x0.018) = 21.63kgs

Let the thickness of plastering be 12 mm and CM(1:4)

Volume of wet mortar = 12 mm X 1500 sq.m.
= 18 cu.m.
Add 20% for depressions, joints and wastage
= 3.6 + 18 = 21.6 cu.m.
Volume of Dry Mortar = 1.3 X 21.6 = 28.08 cu.m.
Cement required = 1/5 X 28.08 = 5.62 cu.m.
= 160.6 Bags
Sand required = 4/5 X 28.08 = 22.46 cu.m
