time you visit the Sterling Heights Nature
Center, your smartphone can be of
assistance when learning more about
specific animals.
High school students who are members of
the Warren Consolidated Schools Macomb
Mathematics Science Technology Center
(MMSTC) Ecology Club recently created
QR codes to make certain animal sites at
the nature center more interactive.
Once a visitor scans the QR code with their
phone, they are led to a website the
MMSTC students created that provides
information on that specific exhibit. Theres
also a quiz for each exhibit, junior Maria
Gallo said. The Ecology Club has about 25
members, and MMSTC math teacher
Christine Kincaid Dewey is the sponsor.
MMSTC junior Michael McMain said there
is an application on smartphones that can
be downloaded to access the QR codes that
automatically scan through a camera
a code. A QR code consists of black square
dots arranged in a square grid on a white
background.

You fill the QR code inside of the box

from the camera, and it will automatically
take you to a website, he said. It does it
for you. You type in the URL you want.
The codes can be printed out, and each QR
code is special. They are all unique.

made, had them laminated and taped
them by each animal they researched.

them by each animal they researched.

Right now, the students have six QR codes
up on six animals. Dewey said there are
plans to add more and more QR codes to
other exhibits. The students also would like
to add videos to their websites.
This can be a work in progress. Its a
project that can grow, Dewey said. You
can change the web page anytime you
want. The whole thing was to make it
more interactive. Its kind of fun to give
back to the community. Were really grateful Sterling Heights has a nature center.
Freshman Suyailim Nahin did his QR code on the Eastern fox snake, while Gallo made
one for the painted turtle. Freshman Taif Rahman found information on the milk snake,
and senior Matthew DeSantis did a QR code on the American toad. Junior Madeline
Manuel researched the gray tree frog.
Theyre really small. They have rough and warty skin, but not as much as a toad,
Manuel said. They are pretty much nocturnal.
The MMSTC students attend school for one half of the day at the Butcher Educational
Center in Warren, and then attend the other half of the day at their home school. Some
attend in the morning, while others attend in the afternoon. Students come from 12
schools, including Warren Mott, Sterling Heights, Cousino and Warren Woods Tower.
The ecology enthusiasts meet every Wednesday after school. Because the students are
involved in so many other activities, the club is somewhat informal.
Under Deweys guidance, the students participate in many activities, have welcomed guest
speakers, and help maintain the Butcher courtyard.
The club members came up with the idea to create QR codes when visiting the nature
center last year. They began working on them at the beginning of this school year.
The students have headed fundraisers to adopt animals at the nature center. Eleventhgrade student Kelsey Giffin said the biggest fundraiser was the MMSTCs talent show held
March 17. Penny wars proved to be another good way to raise funds.
The MMSTC was developed in an effort to create an innovative environment to foster
excellence and vision in teaching, learning and discovering the relationships of
mathematics, science, technology and society. Courses cover several subjects, including
geometry, biology, interdisciplinary studies, calculus and physics.
The Sterling Heights Nature Center is located at 42700 Utica Road. For more information,
