- distributes live load and dead load

(from abutment and superstructure) on
subsoil at a uniform rate

2 MAIN BODY OR
BREAST WALL

- works as retaining wall

- carries load of superstructure to
footing

3 WING WALL

- works as retaining wall

- carries loads from sidewalk cap, curb
and other equipment

4 BACK OR
PARAPET WALL

- works as retaining wall for upper part

of backfill soil

5 BRIDGE SEAT

- distributes loads from pads at a

uniform rate

6 PAD

- helps in bearing exchange during

maintenance
- compensates different level of main
