Task- Ear Anatomy & Function

Complete the following table:
Anatomy

Outer, middle or inner

ear?

Function

Auricle

Outer

The Cleshy outer part of

the ear.

Ear Canal

Outer

Funnels the energy of the

vibrating air particles
through to the eardrum.

Eardrum

Outer

The membrane that

vibrates in response to
the vibrating air particles.

Ossicles

Middle

The three bones which

pass on vibrations to the
inner ear though to the
oval window.

Oval Window

Middle

It is an opening that leads

from the middle ear to the
semicircular canals of the
inner ear through which
sound vibrations of the
stapes are transmitted.

Semicircular Canals

Inner

It is lined with the cilia

which are very sensitive
hair cells. They are Cilled
with a liquid substance
known as endolymph and
when the head moves the
liquid moves the cilia and
it works as a motion
sensor and helps us keep
balance.

Cochlear

Inner

The function of the

cochlea is to transform
the vibrations of the
cochlear liquids and
associated structures into
a neural signal. This
occurs at the organ of
Corti, which is located all
along the cochlea.

Auditory Nerve

Inner

The auditory nerve

carries auditory sensory
information from the
cochlea of the inner ear
directly to the brain.

Eustachian

Middle

a narrow passage leading

from the pharynx to the
cavity of the middle ear,
permitting the
equalization of pressure
on each side of the
eardrum.
