Housing Design

You get to design a house for yourself to live in. The new neighborhood you live in
has strict requirements for the way the house looks. To make sure that you meet all
the requirements, you must have the building supervisor (Mrs. Morrison) initial each
section before moving on to the next.

Part 1: Drafting your house.

Using the graph paper provided, you will be designing your dream house with the
following criteria:
____ A horizontal base through the point (0, -4)
____ At least two vertical walls
____ 2 slated lines for the roof, one must slant more than the other
____ one rectangular door
____ at least one diamond shaped window

Mrs. Morrison initials: ___________

Part 2: Calculations and Analysis

Once your house is finished you must submit the calculations to the builder so that
they can make sure it gets done correctly:
Endpoints of your horizontal base:
Endpoints of the right vertical wall:
Endpoints of the left vertical wall:
Endpoints of slant 1 of your roof:
Endpoints of slant 2 of your roof:

Calculate the slope of each side of your roof:

Which side of the roof will snow fall off easier?

Calculate the slope of the sides of your door.

Calculate the slope of your exterior walls:

How is the slope of your walls and door similar? Why?

Calculate the slope of each side of your window:

Part 3: Renovations

Now that you have your house drafted, you realized how small it really is. The
planning board has also put in some new requirements that your house must meet
otherwise they will not let you build it.
_____ Each exterior wall must move 2 units closer to the edge of the paper
_____ Your horizontal base must now go through (0, -3)
_____ One side of your roof must go through the point (0, 10) and use the same
slope
_____ You must add a second diamond window around the origin (Hint: You might
have to most your window or door to make this work)

Part 4: Re-calculate
Calculate the slope of each side of your roof:

Calculate the slope of each side of your new window:

Part 5: Landscaping
Now that your house meets the requirements you can finish designing it with a few
rules. Your house must also meet the following criteria to be eligible to be built.

____ a Bush around point (-6, -3) in front of your house

____ a Tree around point (14, 4)
____ an animal somewhere in the area with a negative x and a positive y
____ a light on your house next to the front door
____ the walls of your house must be painted a light color (other than white)
