Mick,

The changes we made in the session will feel very different due to the alterations in
technique and the use of different muscle groups.

The good news is that with some practice these changes will become drilled in and feel
natural, resulting in lower scores!

Chipping

Stance

 Stand closer to the ball and reduce the stance width to provide greater
control.
 Ball position is backwards of centre and the weight is 70% on your left
side to ensure a downward strike and the ball is struck first.
 Withdraw the left foot so that the stance is pointing to the left of target
(open) but ensure the shoulders are still aligned to the target (square) to
ensure the swing path follows the target line.
 The stance is the same as a pitch except there is more weight on your
left side, stance width is reduced and you should be stood closer to the
ball.
Technique

 Keep the “triangle” connected throughout the shot between the

shoulders, arms and hands.
 Do not cock the wrists as this will create a lever and an unwanted
increase in swing speed.
 Maintain a smooth, consistent speed of swing similar to a pitch for
every shot.
 Ensure the follow through is the same length or longer than the
backswing to promote acceleration through impact.
 For a change of distance, change the length of swing accordingly or
change the club.

Putting

Technique & Stance

 Same process as chipping; maintain the triangle between shoulders,

arms and hands and let the shoulders control the stroke.
 Keep the stroke smooth and controlled throughout.
 Ensure that the follow through is longer than the backswing as this will
produce a positive stroke and help impart topspin on the golf ball.
 The ball position is forward of centre (in line with your left eye) again to
help impart topspin on the golf ball by striking the ball on the up.
 Make sure the putter is positioned flat on the surface to facilitate a
straight back and through putting stroke.
 This will mean you are standing closer to the ball than before. Your
reference check for the correct position is to drop a ball from the left eye
to the ground as we did in the lesson.
