YMCAs Community HOPE Mentoring Program

Community HOPE is a mentor/literacy program with the Alexander Family YMCA. Community HOPE isnt just a tutoring program.
Its a relationship a bond between mentor and child. With your help, students can gain more than one grade level of literacy
proficiency each year. In addition, these children develop confidence and an expanded vision for their future.
As a mentor, you will meet with your student once a week, on a set day and time, throughout the school year. Mentoring sessions
are offered Monday through Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. During these one-hour sessions, you and your mentee will have
the opportunity to build a relationship while working through an individualized literacy plan.
Mentors who commit to working with a student for the academic year will have the following responsibilities/expectations from the
program leadership staff:

Commit to an hour each week working with the same student through a structured literacy folder that is divided into three
sections: literature comprehension, vocabulary development and objective reinforcement.
Mentor their assigned student by spending time with them outside of the tutoring hour, at least twice a semester.
Attend all trainings and meetings that will increase their knowledge of community development, as it relates to their
relationship with the assigned student and their family.
Be comfortable tutoring in a church and being in the presence of pastoral staff and church members.
Be a positive role model for the youth and families that are participants in the Community HOPE program.
Communicate and build a positive working relationship with the assigned students alternate mentor.
Effectively communicate with the staff, parents and other volunteers associated with the Community HOPE Mentoring
Program.
