ENT 316 PRINCIPLES OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

TUTORIAL 1
CHAPTER 1 & CHAPTER 2

Chapter 1
1. State the differences between Analog and Digital communication systems.
2. State the basic requirements of communication system.
3. Define the following terms: fr equency, cycle, wavelength and period.
4. Briefly describe FOUR (4) elements of communication system.
5. What are the limitations in a Communication System?
6. Why modulation is needed?
7. What is the frequency when the measured wavelength is 6 m?
8. Why the signal received in receiver end is week? Justify your answers
9. A signal is sent through a cable with a propogation factor of 0.69 of c (velocity of
light). What is the velocity? What is the wavelength?

Chapter 2
10. We want to add three signals P1, P2 and P3 with levels of 0 dBm, +3 dBm and -6 dBm.
What is the total power?
11. The receiver systems have three stages comprised of two amplifiers and one filter
with an input of Pin 7.55mW and absolute power gains of A p1 75, A p 2 1.5
and A p3 100 , determine:
(i)

The input power in dBm and the total gain.

(ii)

Output power ( Pout ) in watts and dBm.

(iii)

The dB gain of each of the three stages and the overall gain in dB.

12. Given a three-stages system with an input power Pin = -26 dBm and power gains of
the three stages of Ap1 = 23 dB, Ap2 = -3 dB, Ap3 = 16 dB, determine the output power
(Pout) in dBm and watts.
13. A laser diode outputs +10 dBm. Convert this value to (i) watts
14. What is the importance of using Crystals on generating the carrier frequency?
15. How do you generate the multiple carrier frequency from a crystal oscillator?

16. Determine the resonant frequency for the circuit shown in Fig 1 where R=30 ; L= 3
mH; C=0.1 F. Calculate the impedance when f=12 kHz.

17. A series RLC filter circuit has a lower and upper cut off frequencies of 450 Hz and
460 Hz. Calculate the (i) bandwidth (ii) Q factor (iii) the value of inductance if
C=0.001 F (iv) the total circuit resistance.
18. Determine the combined power when a signal with a power level of 10 dBm is
combined with a second signal with a power level of 8 dBm.
19. What is the dB gain (or loss) for

the following situation?

(i)

For a certain system, the output power is 100,000 times the input power.

(ii)

When the power out of a certain system is 0.01 times the power in.

20. A signal enters the circuit with a value of 0.1 V and is amplified to 5 V. The input and
output resistances are the same. Calculate the gain magnitude in dB.
21. Convert a power level of 20 mW to dBm.
