Mini-Lesson: Chapter 1.1 Take already bundled straws (bundled in 10s)
and single straws and lay them on the floor. Ask: can anyone tell me how
many straws there are? After several answers are given, take rubber band
off the bundle and count all straws to get the answer. Repeat several
times. Then pass out straws and have students decide and count out the
number of straws they want (not telling anyone the number they have).
Then they will get into partners and guess how many straws their partner
has. Repeat with different partners.

lid on my desk) and ask students how many marbles are there. Get
estimates and then write the word estimate on the overhead and explain
what it means and that they are estimating how many marbles there are.
Then count them by putting them in groups of 10. Hold up a handful of
pencils repeating the process.

on the overhead and discuss what they mean. (I usually discuss an
alligators mouth as a visional to help students understand that when an
alligator is hungry it eats the biggest number). Write a number on each
side of the symbol and discuss (ex. 15 > 12 meaning fifteen is greater
than twelve and using my hand to chomp the 15 as the biggest number).

Math: poster method/ problem solving


You have 8 dimes. At the store, you see some toys that you want to buy.
The ball costs $0.90. The stuffed bear costs $0.60. The jump rope costs
$0.95. Which toy can you buy? (transparency problem)

Put problem solving math transparency on the overhead. Have students


try to solve problem independently (3 mins). Then, put them into groups
of four or less. Have the groups discuss the individual answers and come
up with a group answer to put on the chart paper. When the groups
become ready pass out chart paper and markers and have them put the
answer they chose on the chart paper (25 mins). Then, have a student
from each group visit the other groups to see what answers they came up
with (7 mins). Lastly, the original group gets back together to discuss
their final answer and make changes if necessary. Have a student write
their answer in a statement on the back of their chart paper (5 mins.).
Each group presents their final answer to the whole class (10 mins).
