The Jews raised sheep because of Gods demand for sacrifices.
I. Early Old Testament examples of sacrifices:
A. Adam and Eve Gen. 3:21.
This marked an association in their minds My sin cost the
life of an animal.
B. Cain and Abel Gen. 4:1-7.
If we dont sacrifice how God wants us to, it is unacceptable.
II. Israel as a nation had their sacrifices.
A. The Passover lamb Ex. 12:1-13.
The blood on the doorposts distinguished believers from nonbelievers.
B. The sacrifices of the law. Leviticus 17:11 tells us why an animal
it is the blood that makes atonement for your souls.
1. The animal must be unblemished.
2. It must be identified with the sinner Lev. 4:32-34.
3. It must die.
4. Its blood must be applied.
C. The purpose for it all:
1. This was atonement, or a covering, for sin (Lev. 17:11)
2. This was done to foreshadow the Saviour. Acts 15:18.
III. Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God (John 1:29-34.)
A. His death fit the pattern of the OT sacrifices.
1. unblemished 1 Pet. 1:18-19; 2:22.
2. identification 1 Pet. 2:24.
3. death Jesus died on purpose & for a purpose, John 10:18.
4. blood applied Heb. 9:11-12 (see also Heb. 10:10, 18).
B. The purpose of His death forgiveness of sin (Lk 24:44-47).
- repentance = what they must do
- remission of sings = what God offers them
The sinner must identify with the Substitute.
