I. Setting the scene for the miracle (v. 22-24).
A. What Jesus was doing praying.
Though separated from them physically, they never left Jesus
sight or security.
B. What the disciples were doing straining to the point of
exhaustion!
As frustrated and exhausted as they may have been, they
were doing exactly what the Lord wanted.
II. Jesus walked on the water to the boat (v. 25-27).
A. He came to the disciples.
Jesus displayed His deity: ruling and overruling nature.
B. The manner of His coming frightened them.
C. His words calmed them (v. 27).
1. They knew that they would be safe.
2. We are also safe in His arms when we walk in His will.
III. Peter walked on the water to go to Jesus (v. 28-31).
A. He had some faith daring to go!
B. He had little faith a distracted focus.
1. He was sinking like a rock beneath the waves, but Jesus was
like a Rock above the waves.
2. Jesus rebuked him for not having greater faith. Even those
close to Jesus may become hardened.
IV. The result (v. 32-33) The wind ceasedthe need for it was
gone.
- God wants us to have the faith to carry on doing the will of God
despite hardships.
- Contrary winds (hardship) allow us to see greater measures of
Gods power and grace, and they do not prevent us from
landing exactly where God wants us to be.
- The disciples recognised Jesus for who He was. Proof: they
worshiped Him and they called Him the Son of God.
Jesus both rules both nature and overrules nature. He gave these these
evidences of His deity:
1. so we will believe for salvation.
2. So our hearts will be softened to receive his message.
3. So our faith in Him will increase.
