Positive impacts
TIMSS allows countries to not only receive information
on the educational status in their own country, but also
provides the opportunity for comparing their
educational systems with other countries (URAL KELE &
AYDIN 2016).

TIMSS enables Education Systems to make informed,

evidence-based decisions for educational policies
(Ruddock 2005).
TIMSS brings attention to achievement gaps

Negative impacts
Age level and grade levels differ from country to country,
therefore what qualifies as a peer?
Testing format is not in line with higher thinking skills
(Sabah, Hammouri & Akour 2013).
Negative results can cause panic and do not take into
account variables (Drent, Meelissen & van der Kleij 2013).

Personal Reflection
TIMSS is a good assessment in which countries can
evaluate their curriculum by comparing students
scores with the international mean.
When making these comparisons external influences,
and the overall accuracy of results need to be
considered.
