Many a rider has halted here and drank wine mixed with pure water
Time whisked them away and they perished, as Time does time and again
Story
Al-Numan ibn al-Mundhir went out to hunt accompanied by Abi ibn Zayd. When
they passed by a tree, Adi ibn Zayd asked al-Numan, O King, do you know what
this tree is saying? al-Numan said he did not. At this point, Adi ibn Zayd recited:
Many a rider has halted here and drank wine mixed with pure water
Time whisked them away and they perished, as Time does time and again
Then they continued on and came to a graveyard. Adi asked al-Numan: O King, do
you know what this cemetery is saying? Al-Numan said he did not. At this point,
Adi ibn Zayd recited:
O riders sauntering on clear level ground
As you are now, we once were; as we are now, so will you be
Al-Numan exclaimed, The tree and the graveyard are not speaking. I knew that
you wanted to admonish me, so tell me: by what path may salvation be attained?
Adi ibn Zayd responded: Leave off worshipping idols, worship God, and follow the
religion of the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary. Is there salvation in that? al-Numan
asked. Adi ibn Zayd responded yes, and al-Numan became a Christian then. It is
said that this story about Adi involves al-Numan ibn al-Mundhir the elder and that
the al-Numan that put Adi ibn Zayd to death was Ibn al-Mundhir, the son of the alNuman who converted to Christianity.1

1 This seems to be a confused attempt to reconcile this story with the fact that alNu'man III ibn al-Mundhir (r. 582-602) had Adi ibn Zayd imprisoned and later
executed as a result of court intrigues.
