This curriculum map comes from Esperanza Elementary School in the Isaac School
District. The curriculum map comes from 2nd grade team ELD and mainstream. The lessons

created are for a 2nd grade mainstream class. The classroom has 24 students, in which all are
mainstream students that vary in levels of academic performance.
Mini Lesson 1
Sun Safety
With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as
needed by revising and editing. (2.W.5)

Sun Safety lesson will begin by teacher stating the writing topic for the day. Teacher will
tell students that they topic for the day is going to be about sun safety. Teacher will ask students
What do you know about sun safety? teacher will have students pair share with their AB partner
at their table. Teacher will call names from the popsicle sticks and have students share what they
know about sun safety. Teacher will provide a KWL that students can use to tell about sun safety.
What do you know about sun safety? what do you want to know about sun safety? and what did
you learn about sun safety? Teacher will guide students in filling out the KWL chart. Teacher will
have students fill in the chart of what they know about sun safety and what they want to learn
about sun safety. Then teacher will then present Sun Safe Everyday! YouTube video. Teacher
will have a class discussion about sun safety from watching the video and highlight one important
fact stated in the video. Teacher will model writing on the what I learned about sun safety?
section of KWL chart a fact on something new learned. Then have students write down 2 facts
they learned. Teacher will present Sunshine On My Shoulders - Sun Safety PowerPoint. Students
will write 4 facts about what they learned about sun safety. Using the information students
collected from the video and PowerPoint presentation students will write a paragraph addressing
what they learned about sun safety and the importance. At the end of the lesson students will do

peanut butter and jelly to share with a partner.


Mini Lesson 2
Sleep
Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. (2.RL.3)

The mini lesson on sleep will begin by teacher introducing the focus question for the
lesson, Do you think sleep is important?. Teacher will have students think about the question and
have them pair share with a partner sitting next to them. Teacher will have a five-minute
discussion about the importance of sleep. Teacher will pull up http://www.sleepforkids.org
website to introduce some of the highlights of the importance of sleep. Teacher will present a
trade book Go to Sleep, Gecko!: A Balinese Folktale as a way to help students understand the
importance of sleep in a fun way. Teacher will have students fill in a graphic organizer as the
book is read to where students are identifying the challenges the character in the book are facing
with being unable to sleep because of the fireflies that are keeping him awake. Students will
discuss peanut butter and jelly what they found the character Gecko was facing and students will
go back and add some of the information they received from other students. When students
reflect on the challenges Gecko was facing with being unable to sleep, students will then do a
quick write as an exit ticket on their reading notebooks on how they would feel if they were
unable to sleep one school night (upset, cranky, mad, sleepy, tired, etc.). Teacher will also have
students write down one thing they learned about the importance of sleep.

Mini Lesson 3
Environmental Health

Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to


answer a question. (2.W.8)
Teacher will begin environmental health lesson by asking the lesson big question what
are some dangers of pollution in the planet Earth? Teacher will introduce key words and define
those key words pollution, Earth, environment, conserve. Teacher will have students repeat key
words and teach it to their AB partners. Teacher will introduce text The Lorax by Dr.Seuss to
the class. Teacher will read The Lorax by Dr.Seuss and ask students to have the big question in
mind about what are some dangers of pollution in the planet Earth?. When teacher is finished
reading text, teacher will ask "What is pollution?" (Something in the environment that is harmful
or poisonous) and have students discuss some examples from the book. Teacher will have
students discuss dangers of pollution in the Earth. (ex: throwing trash, wasting water, excessive
use of energy) Teacher will begin by guiding students to some examples and then have students
share another example. Teacher will then minimize it to one danger by giving examples on ways
we use water each day and how it affects the Earth when water is being contaminated or
overused. Teacher will ask how do you use water everyday? Teacher will have students make a
list of how they use water everyday (ex: when taking a shower, brushing teeth, etc.). Teacher will
then ask how can you reduce the amount of water you use everyday? Students will write the
question on their journal and write their response to the question using key words learned
pollution, Earth, environment, conserve. When finished students will sit at the carpet and share
with a partner what they wrote. Lastly, teacher will go back to the big question. What are some
dangers of pollution in our planet Earth? Teacher will call on students to share and teacher will
add to students thoughts to elaborate on their learning. Teacher will finish the lesson by pulling
