GERMANY

PRESIDENT OF GERMANY

BACKGROUND:
Germany is a republic with a
parliamentary democracy and
a bicameral system of
government. The federal
legislative power is controlled
by the Bundestag which is
the Parliament of Germany
and the Bundesrat which is
the representative body of
Germanys regional states.
The political system is
outlined in the 1949
constitution.

Germany has a parliamentary systems therefore the federal chancellor is the

leading political figure for the nation and the de facto chief executive.
However Germany does have a president. Instead of being a having a political
role the president has a more ceremonial role. The president leads political
and social debates and has some reserved powers for instances where the
government may become instable. In a sense the President is more of a
back-up to parliament. The President does however have certain duties
such as representing the federal republic of Germany during matters of
International Law, concludes treaties with foreign regions, and all federal
laws must be signed by the president before they can go into effect. Currently
the President is Joachim Gauck. He has been president since March 18th
2012.

The Federal Council

There are two chambers of the German parliament. The second chamber is
called the Bundesrat and it represents the federal states interests at national
level. There are 69 members and it is involved in making and deciding on
legislation.

FEDERAL PARLIAMENT
Another name for the federal parliament is Bundestag. It is made up of
representatives that have been elected by the German people. The main
responsibility of the parliament is to create and and pass legislation, approve
the national bedget and to determine the deployment of the German military.
Elections for the federal parliament takes place every four years.
