ITALIA

BY: NICK BRUNGO

Rome
The city of Rome was located in Italia
The Province of Italia was crucial for
the expansion of Rome into a world
power.

The Founding of Rome

Rome was founded in 713 BC by
Romulus
It started as a small farming town but
grew overtime into the powerful
empire that we all know today

The Early Conquest of Etrusca

At the time of the founding of Rome,
The Etruscans were the most
powerful group in Italy
By 4th century BC, Rome was slowly
draining Etrusca of its power

War in Italy
At around 496 BC, the tribes of Italia
turned to war
The Latin League, a group of states
that shared common interests, allied
with two other states and declared
war with Rome
The battle of Lake Regillus was
important for Rome because it
showed that Rome could hold its own
against the combined power of its
neighbors

The Gallic Sacking of Rome

In the 4th and 5th centuries BC, Gallic
Celts pushed southward looking for
new territory
The Gauls crossed the Alps in great
numbers and took Etruscan territory
by force

After suffering a crushing defeat just outside of Rome, the defenders retreated
back to Rome

One of the more aggressive tribes

that settled there were the Senones

They continued to harass Rome for seven months until they left at a price of
1,000 lbs of gold

The Senones marched toward Rome

in 390 BC
The Romans hurriedly pieced
together a defending force and
moved to intercept the Gauls

The Gauls flooded Rome and started looting and burning buildings and
slaughtering civilians

The Wealth of Italia

Another important reason that Rome
became so powerful was the wealth
of Italy
The Po River was important for early
Roman farms
Southern Italy was heavily forested
and provided an abundance of timber
Crops such as wheat, barley, and
corn were grown in abundance
Olives and grapes became a big part
of Roman culture and still are today
