Objectives
Students will learn to tell different characteristics of landforms. The landforms that
they will be learning about in this lesson are mountains, valleys, peninsulas, rivers,
plains, islands, oceans, and lakes. They will have a basic knowledge of these
landforms and be able to identify them if shown.
SS.K2.G.2
Essential Concept and/or Skill: Understand how geographic and human
characteristics create culture and define regions.
Anticipatory Set
I will begin this lesson by doing an activity using their hands to describe the
different landforms that we will be learning about. (Their whole hand is the ocean,
the palm of their hand is a lake, the lines on their palm is a river, if they make a fist
then the knuckles are mountains, in between the knuckles are valleys). I will then
have them stand up to create landforms in the room. (They stand touching a wall
and they are a peninsula, if they do not touch the wall they are an island. They
stand in a circle as a lake and in a winding line as a river.)
Procedures
For the next part of the landform lesson, I will give each student a paper plate.
They will color half of the plate green and half blue. Each table will be given a
blue, brown, and green play dough set. They will then use play dough to create
different landforms on their plate. They will also be given labels so they are able to
label each landform on their plate.
Closure
I will end the lesson by the students finding a partner to share their landforms with.
Do all of their landforms look the same? How are they different? Do they still both
contain the characteristics of the landforms? Which landform is their favorite?
Assessment
The evidence that I will collect would be their landforms that they created from
play dough. Did they have all eight landforms on their plate? Were all the
landforms correct? Were all the landforms labeled properly?
