IGCSE PRESSURE CALCULATIONS

Q1. What pressure on the snow does a snowmobile make if it has a weight
of 800N and the runners have an area of 0.2m 2 ?

Q2. Calculate the pressure generated by an ordinary shoe heel (person of

mass 40kg, heel 5cm x 5cm), an elephant (of mass 500Kg, foot of
20cm diameter) and a high- heeled shoe (person of mass 40kg, heel of
area 0.5cm2). Which ones will damage the floor that starts to give way at
a pressure of 4000kPa?
Note to convert from cm2 to m2 you need to divide by 10,000

Q3. The manometer on an industrial machine shows that the oil rig is being
pushed towards the machine and the height difference, h is 20cm. What
is the pressure inside the machine if the pressure outsides is 100kPa?
The oil has a density of 800 kg/m3

Q4. An aquarium in a sea life centre has a tunnel through a tank of water at
a depth of 5m below the surface with a pressure of 100kPa from the air
above. The manufacturer guarantees the tunnel to a pressure difference
of 200kPa. Is the tunnel safe?

Q5. The pressure gauge on a submarine in a river was reading 100kPa when
it was at the surface. If the sailor notices that the gauge is now reading
250kPa, how deep is he ? How would the answer change if he was
diving in sea water that is slightly denser than fresh water?
