NationalparksinIndiaareIUCNcategoryIIprotectedareas.India's
firstnationalpark(referenceneededaskazirangaisestablishedin
1905)wasestablishedin1936asHaileyNationalPark,nowknownas
JimCorbettNationalPark,Uttarakhand.By1970,Indiaonlyhadfive
nationalparks.In1972,IndiaenactedtheWildlifeProtectionActand
ProjectTigertosafeguardthehabitatsofconservationreliantspecies.
Furtherfederallegislationstrengtheningprotectionsforwildlifewas
introducedinthe1980s.AsofJuly2015,therewere105nationalparks
encompassinganareaof40,500km2(15,600sqmi),comprising
1.23%ofIndia'stotalsurfacearea.[1]

PlansareunderwaytoestablishmanymorenationalparksinIndia.All
ofIndia'snationalparksarelistedbelowalongsidetheirhomestateorterritory,areaandthedatethatthey
