NationalparksinIndiaareIUCNcategoryIIprotectedareas.India'sfirst
nationalparkwasestablishedin1936asHaileyNationalPark,nowknownas
JimCorbettNationalPark,Uttarakhand.By1970,Indiaonlyhadfivenational
parks.In1972,IndiaenactedtheWildlifeProtectionActandProjectTigerto
safeguardthehabitatsofconservationreliantspecies.Furtherfederal
legislationstrengtheningprotectionsforwildlifewasintroducedinthe1980s.
AsofJuly2015,therewere103nationalparksencompassinganareaof
40,500km2(15,600sqmi),comprising1.23%ofIndia'stotalsurfacearea.[1]
PlansareunderwaytoestablishmanymorenationalparksinIndia.Allof
India'snationalparksarelistedbelowalongsidetheirhomestateorterritory,
areaandthedatethattheywereestablished.SeeProtectedareasofIndiaforan
