QUIZ in CHE 327 (Application of Laplace transform)

Problem 1. When a cake is removed from an oven, its temperature is measured at 300 F. Three
minutes later its temperature is 200 F. How long will it take for the cake to cool off to a room
temperature of 70 F. Apply Newtons empirical law of cooling to model the system, then solve
using (a) Laplace transform and (b) other analytical method.
Problem 2. Devise a mathematical model for the temperature of the cake in Problem 1 while it is
inside the oven based on the following assumptions:
a. At t = 0, the cake mixture is at the room temperature of 70 F.
b. The oven is not pre-heated. At t = 0, the oven is also at 70 F.
c. The temperature of the oven increases linearly until t = 4 minutes, when the desired
temperature of 300 F is attained.
d. The oven temperature is a constant 300 F for t 4.
Use Laplace transform to solve the initial value problem.
