Questions:
1. A closed system with 1 kg of superheated steam as the working fluid undergoes a reversible process at a

constant pressure of 0.05 MPa so that the temperature changes from 100 °C to 250 °C.

a) What is the heat transfer for this process?

b) Is this heat transfer into or out of the system?

A heater placed within the system can supply 1.5 kW of heat to the fluid.

c) How many minutes does it take to get the temperature inside the system up to 600 °C from 250 °C?

d) By how much does the volume of the system change within these two temperatures?

2. A closed rigid container has 1 kg of superheated steam at a pressure of 0.1 MPa and temperature of 500 °C.

It undergoes a heat transfer of -546 kJ such that the final pressure is now 0.05 MPa.

a) What is the temperature of the system at the second state?

b) A cooler placed within the closed rigid container took up the heat in 10 min.; what is its cooling power

in kW?

3. A non-flow adiabatic process delivers 800 MJ of work to the surroundings after the working fluid

(superheated steam) goes from State 1 (400 °C and 0.2 MPa) to State 2 (150 °C and 0.01MPa). How much of

the steam in kg does it contain?

4. A non-flow isothermal process changes the state of the working fluid (1 kg of superheated steam) from an

initial state characterized by a temperature of 400 °C and pressure of 0.3 MPa to a second state. In the course of

the process, the system does 33 kJ of work to the surroundings. What is the final pressure of the system?

5. A non-flow polytropic process changes 1kg of superheated steam from State 1 (20 bar, 400 ºC) to State 2 (2

bar, 250 ºC). The expansion follows the law pv1.1 = constant. Calculate the work and heat transfer for the

process.
