Word Problems
Every day, as part of our morning message, the children are given a math problem to solve.
First we read the problem together and sometimes we draw pictures to help us. Then we
think about whether we need to use addition or subtraction to solve the problem.

Example: Leonor has 5 apples and she gives 2 to Hui. How many does she have left? (hint: draw 5 apples and
cross out 2. How many do you have left? 5 – 2 = 3)

Afonso has 10 apples. He gives 5 to Elli. How many does he have

left?

Ines had 20 pigs at her farm. She gave five to Tiago and 5 to Sofia.
How many pigs did she have left on her farm?

Madalena had 6 oranges. Oliwia came to bring her 4 more. How

many did Madalena have altogether?

Julianna had 5 lollipops. Matilde had 6 lollipops. How many did

they have altogether?
