• Welcome
• Purpose of the lesson: to
familiarize English
learners with key
terminology used in
mathematics.
Slide 2:
Objective
To understand
and recognize
commonly used
mathematical
terms in
English.
Slide 3: Numbers

• Cardinal numbers: 1, 2, 3, ... Example: "I have

Types of three apples."
Numbers • Ordinal numbers: first, second, third, ... Example:
"He came in second place in the race."

The concept of • Even numbers can be divided by 2 with no

even and odd remainder. Example: 6/2 = 3
• Odd numbers cannot: Example: 7/2 = 3 R1
numbers
Slide 4: Operations

Addition: combining two or more numbers

Example: "2 + 3 = 5"
Subtraction: finding the difference between two
numbers Example: "6 - 4 = 2"
Multiplication: repeated addition or grouping
Example: "2 x 4 = 8"
Division: sharing or dividing into equal parts
Example: "10 ÷ 2 = 5"
Slide 5: Geometric Shapes

Slide 6: Fractions

Key terms
• Numerator: the top number
representing the part being considered
Example: "In the fraction 3/4, 3 is the
numerator."
• Denominator: the bottom number
representing the total number of equal
parts Example: "In the fraction 3/4, 4 is
the denominator."
• Whole: the complete amount or object
Example: "If you have eaten 2 out of 4
slices of pizza, 4 is the whole."
Slide 7: Decimals

• Examples of decimals (e.g., 0.5, 0.75)

and explain their relationship to
fractions.
• Decimal numbers: 0.5, 0.75, 0.3, ...
Example: "The distance from my house to
school is 2.5 kilometers.“ This means the
same as 2 ½ kilometers from my house
• Place value: the value of a digit based on
its position in a number Example: "In the
decimal number 0.75, 5 is in the
hundredths place."
Slide 8: Percentages
Percentages and their relation to fractions
and decimals.
• Percentage: a fraction or part of 100
• Example: "25% is the same as one-
fourth or 0.25."
Percentages are used to represent parts of
a whole.
• Whole: the complete amount or
object being referred to
• Example: "If there are 100 students
in a class, 75% of them would be 75
students."
Slide 9: Equations
Key terms
• Variable: a symbol that represents an
unknown value Example: "In the equation 2x
= 8, x is the variable."
• Constant: a value that does not change
Example: "In the equation 2x = 8, 2 is the
constant."
• Equal sign: shows that two expressions have
the same value Example: "In the equation 2x
= 8, the equal sign (=) indicates that 2x and 8
have the same value."
Slide 10: Word
Problems Examples of common word
problems
• Example: "John has 5 apples.
He gives 2 apples to Mary.
How many apples does John
have now?"
