MDAS
• MDAS rule Stands
for MULTIPLICATION, DIVISION, ADDI
TION and SUBSTACTION
• Multiplication and\or Division then
Addition and\or Subtraction always work the
problem from left to right applying those rules
first.
Always do
multiplication and division
before
addition and subtraction
So, in this problem
Just work from left to right -- like you
read!
DRILLS
YOUR TURN:
It's the same for addition and subtraction.  T
hey are on the same level, so you just work from left to right.

Check it out:

Go from left to right!

TRY IT:
Now, let's mix it up!
Here's one
with addition, subtraction, multiplication AND divis

Remember...
MDAS
So, we'll hit this section first and go left to right.
DRILLS:
OK, here's a big one!  See if you can do it
before I do!
Hit multiplication and division first...
Just so you know, you don't REALLY have to go left to right
with addition and subtraction.  Sometimes, it's easier to do it by
gathering up all your "plus" guys and gathering up all your "minus"
guys:

PEMDAS
Examples of the Applications of
PEMDAS Rule
• Example 1: Simplify the following expression
using the Order of Operations.
• Solution: Notice that there are three
operations involved. Based on the order of
operations, multiplication takes precedence
over addition and subtraction so we will
multiply first. Next, subtract then add since the
operation of subtraction comes before
addition from left to right.
• Example 2: Simplify the following
expression using the Order of Operations.
• Solution: The grouping symbol has the
highest priority that means we must first
simplify everything inside. Within the
parenthesis, we have the operations of
division and multiplication. Since they have
the same importance, the order how they
appear from left to write will determine
which goes first. In this case, we divide first
then multiply.
•After simplifying the expression inside the
parenthesis, we will have subtraction and division
left. It is obvious that division should be calculated
first before subtraction.
• Example 3: Simplify the following
expression using the Order of
Operations.
• Solution: Simplify the expression inside
the parenthesis then evaluate the
powers (terms with exponents). After
doing so, we will have a simpler
expression that involves addition,
multiplication, and division. Scanning
from left to right, we see that we should
multiply first, then divide and finally add.
Order of Operations

• Do things in Parentheses
First
•  4 × (5 + 3)=4 × 8=32
•   4 × (5 + 3)=20 + 3=23
• (wrong)
Exponents (Powers, Roots) before Multiply,
Divide, Add or Subtract

• 5 × 22=5 × 4=20
•   5 × 22=102=100
• (wrong)
• Multiply or Divide
before you Add or
Subtract
•  2 + 5 × 3=2 + 15=17
•   2 + 5 × 3=7 × 3=21
• (wrong)
Otherwise just go left to right

•30 ÷ 5 × 3=6 × 3=18

•  30 ÷ 5 × 3=30
÷ 15=2
•(wrong)
How Do I Remember It All ... ? PEMDAS !

• P
• Parentheses firstE
• Exponents (ie Powers and Square Roots,
etc.)MD
• Multiplication and Division (left-to-
right)AS
• Addition and Subtraction (left-to-right)
• Divide and Multiply rank
equally (and go left to right).
• Add and Subtract rank
equally (and go left to right)
So do it this way:

• After you have done "P" and "E",

just go from left to right doing
any "M" or "D" as you find them.
• Then go from left to right doing
any "A" or "S" as you find them

• The Santos family also bought
packs of bond paper. Each of the
children received 30 sheets of paper.
A pack of bond paper contains 100
sheets . How many packs of bond
paper did the Santos family buy?
SOLUTION:
• Each of the children 150 children
received 30 sheets.
• 150 x 30 = 150 x 3x 10
= 450 x 10
= 4500 sheets in all
• Since each pack contains 100 sheets
