AboutBBS

WhatistheNorthAmericanBreedingBirdSurvey(BBS)?
TheBBSisalongterm,largescale,internationalavianmonitoringprograminitiatedin
1966totrackthestatusandtrendsofNorthAmericanbirdpopulations.TheUSGSPatuxent
WildlifeResearchCenterandtheCanadianWildlifeService,NationalWildlifeResearch
CenterjointlycoordinatetheBBSprogram.
WhywastheBBScreated?
Inthemidtwentiethcentury,thesuccessofDDTasapesticideusheredinaneweraof
syntheticchemicalpestcontrol.Aspesticideusegrew,concerns,asepitomizedbyRachel
CarsoninSilentSpring,regardingtheireffectsonwildlifebegantosurface.Localstudies
hadattributedsomebirdkillstopesticides,butitwasunclearhow,orif,birdpopulations
werebeingaffectedatregionalornationallevels.Respondingtothisconcern,Chandler
RobbinsandcolleaguesatthePatuxentWildlifeResearchCenterdevelopedtheNorth
AmericanBreedingBirdSurveytomonitorbirdpopulationsoverlargegeographicareas.
AlthoughmostconcernsoverpesticideuseinNorthAmericahavesubsidedinrecent
decades,birdpopulationscontinuetobesubjectedtonumerouswidespreadthreatsincluding
habitatloss,habitatfragmentation,landusechanges,andotherchemicalcontaminants.
Today,theBBScontinuestomonitorbirdpopulationsacrossNorthAmericaandinforms
researchersandwildlifemanagersofsignificantchangesinbirdpopulationlevels.If
significantdeclinesaredetected,theircausescanthenbeidentifiedandappropriateactions
takentoreversethembeforepopulationsreachcriticallylowlevels.
HowdoestheBBSwork?
Eachyearduringtheheightoftheavianbreedingseason,JuneformostoftheU.S.and
Canada,participantsskilledinavianidentificationcollectbirdpopulationdataalong
roadsidesurveyroutes.Eachsurveyrouteis24.5mileslongwithstopsat0.5mileintervals.
Ateachstop,a3minutepointcountisconducted.Duringthecount,everybirdseenwithina
0.25mileradiusorheardisrecorded.Surveysstartonehalfhourbeforelocalsunriseand
takeabout5hourstocomplete.Over4100surveyroutesarelocatedacrossthecontinental
U.S.andCanada.
Onceanalyzed,BBSdataprovideanindexofpopulationabundancethatcanbeusedto
estimatepopulationtrendsandrelativeabundancesatvariousgeographicscales.Trend
estimatesformorethan420birdspeciesandallrawdataarecurrentlyavailableviatheBBS
website.
HowareBBSdataused?
1.TheU.S.FishandWildlifeService,CanadianWildlifeService,andPartnersin
FlightalluseBBStrendsalongwithotherindicatorstoassessbirdconservation
priorities.
2.BBSdatawereinstrumentalinfocusingresearchandmanagementactionon
neotropicalmigrantspeciesinthelate1980s,andongrasslandspeciesinthemid
1990s.
3.StateNaturalHeritageprogramsandBreedingBirdAtlasprojectsoftenutilizeBBS

datatoenrichtheirdatabases.
4.EducatorsoftenuseBBSdataasatooltoteachbiological,statisticalandGIS
concepts.
5.Morethan450scientificpublicationshavereliedheavily,ifnotentirely,onBBSdata.
