    stateNaturalResourcesBoard.
    BackerscontendedWisconsinshouldjoin
    otherstatesthathuntthebird.Wienekeand
    otheropponentssaidthedove,whichwas
    declaredWisconsin'sofficialbirdofpeaceby
    theLegislatureyearsearlier,shouldn'tbe
    addedtothelistofgamebirds.

    dove,"hiswifeNancyWienekesaid

    stateDepartmentofNaturalResourceshad
    authoritytoestablishthedoveseason.
    NancyWienekesaidherhusbandneverlost
    hiscalmcommitmenttologicandstayed
    "honestandforthright"evenwhenthedispute
    becameemotionalandfalsechargeswere
    madeagainsthim.
    Someaccusedhimofbeingamemberof
    PeoplefortheEthicalTreatmentofAnimals,
    shesaid.
    "Ialwayslaughedatthat,"shesaid."Hewas
    ahuntereversincehewasyoung.Hewasa
    meatandpotatoesguy.Icouldnevergethim
    toeatvegetables."
    Hewasdiagnosedwiththyroidcancerin
    2000,butitrespondedwelltosurgeryand
    radiation,shesaid.In2003,hewas
    diagnosedwithpancreaticcancer.
    "Allthewhilehewasspearheadingthedove
    fight,hehadoneformoranotherofcancer,"
    shesaid.
    Survivorsalsoincludeasonanddaughterand
    twograndsons.
