1. A professional skier starts from rest and reaches a speed of 56 m/s on a ski slope 30.0 above the
horizontal. Using the work–kinetic energy theorem and disregarding friction, find the minimum
distance along the slope the skier would have to travel in order to reach this speed.

2. A parachutist with a mass of 50.0 kg jumps out of an airplane at an altitude of 1.00  103 m. After
the parachute deploys, the parachutist lands with a velocity of 5.00 m/s. Using the work–kinetic
energy theorem, find the energy that was lost to air resistance during this jump. (g = 9.81 m/s2.)

3. A child riding a bicycle has a total mass of 40.0 kg. and approaches the top of a hill that is 10.0 m
high and 100.0 m long at 5.0 m/s. If the force of friction between the bicycle and the hill is 20.0
N, disregarding air resistance what is the child’s velocity at the bottom of the hill? g=9.81 m/s2

4. The Giant Drop at Great America lifts a “car” and two people to the top of the ride with a
constant force at a constant velocity. The “car” weighs 250 lb f, one of the people weighs 215 lb f,
the other person weighs 132 lb f. The car is lifted a distance of .030 kilometers. How much work is
done to raise the car and passengers the whole distance?

5. We couldn’t have this test without a roller coaster! So here it is.

The distance from H to I is 120 m.

From I to A is the car being pulled up the incline by the chain to the top.

There is a braking system here, the cart slows from the velocity it has at H to stopped at I where
passengers may get on and off.

All of the kinetic energy from point H is lost as heat through the braking system.

The weight of the 6-passenger car is 420 lb f & it holds six people of average weight (155lbs).

What is the mass of the car plus it’s passengers? Kg.
