1. T = mg, the acceleration of the lift is zero i.e. it may be at rest or is moving with uniform velocity. If the
lift is moving upwards or downwards with an acceleration, then T = m (g ± a) and not mg.
2. The apparent weight will be maximum when the lift moves upwards with an acceleration (a)
Force = Apparent weight = mg + ma
3. When the lift moves up with an acceleration (a),
mg 80
Apparent weight = mg + ma = mg + = 80  = 96 kg
5 5
4. Initial thrust = weight of the rocket (mg) + m x a = m (g + a) = 3.5 x 10 4 [10 + 10] = 7 x 105 N
5. When the lift is moving down with an acceleration ‘a’ the apparent weight of the ball = mg = ma
 The man in the lift will feel the apparent acceleration of the ball = (g – a)
The man inside the lift is in a non vertical frame.
But for a man standing outside the lift, the acceleration of the ball will be g. He is in an inertial frame.
6. When the mass is lifted up with an acceleration a, the tension in the thread,
T1 = apparent vt = m(g + a) and when it is lowered with an acceleration, (a) the tension in the thread
T2 = m (g – a)
T1 g a 9.8  4.9 14.7 3
    
T2 g a 9.8  4.9 4.9 1

7. When the lift moves upward with an acceleration (a), the tension developed in the string, which is
connected to the lift is given by,
T = apparent weight = m (g + a) = 1000 (9.8 + 1) = 1000 x 10.8 = 10800 N
8. When the lift moves upward with an acceleration the reading on the
moving scale
R = his apparent weigh. R
a
Or R = mg + ma = m (g + a) = 90 (10 + 5) = 1200N
