FIZ3000- FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS

TUTORIAL 1
Instruction: Answer all questions and state clearly the step-bystep solution. The tutorial due date is 22nd Nov 2015 (1 week).
Please submit in group.
1. The age of the universe is thought to be about 14 billion years. Assuming
two significant figures, write this in powers of ten in (a) years, (b) seconds.

2. Multiply

2.079 10 2 m

by

0.082 10 1 ,

taking into account significant figures.

3. An angstrom (symbol ) is a unit of length, defined as 10-10 m which is on

the order of the diameter of an atom. (a) How many nanometers are in 1.0
angstrom? (b) How many femtometers or fermis (the common unit of
length in nuclear physics) are in 1.0 angstrom? (c) How many angstroms
are in 1.0 meter? (d) How many angstroms are in 1.0 light-year (A lightyear is the distance light travels in one year at speed of 2.998 x 10 8m/s)?
4. A river flows at 3 mph and a rower rows at 6 mph. What heading angle ()
should the rower take to go straight across a river?
5. Find the resultant vector of A and B given in the graph below.

Figure 1.
6. A world-class sprinter can burst out of the blocks to essentially top speed
(of about 11.5 m/s) in the first 15.0 m of the race. What is the average
acceleration of this sprinter, and how long does it take her to reach that
speed?
7. A baseball is hit nearly straight up into the air with a speed of 22 m/s. (a)
How high does it go? (b) How long is it in the air?

8. Stating at x = -16 m at time t = 0 s, an object takes 18 s to travel 48 m in

the +x direction at a contant velocity. Make a position-versus-time graph of
the objects motion and calculate its velocity.
9. A ball is thrown horizontally from the roof of a building 45.0 m tall and
lands 24.0 m from the base. What was the balls initial speed?
10.A man pushing a lawn mower exerts a force of 436 N on the handle (Fig.
2). The handle makes an angle of 40 O with the horizontal. What is the
horizontal force applied to the mower?

Figure 2.
11.Two horses pull horizontally on ropes attached to a tree stump (Fig. 3).
Each horse pulls with a force of magnitude F. If the angle between the two
ropes is 126O, what is the resultant force?

Figure 3.
12.A 60.0-kg crate rests on a level floor at a shipping dock. The coefficeints of
static and kinetic friction are 0.760 and 0.410, respectively. What
horizontal pushing force is required to (a) just start the crate moving and
(b) slide the crate across the dock at a constant speed?
